What to see & do ……………… all so close to Maggie’s on York

City Park, just around the corner, has magnificent specimen trees, a rotunda, plant conservatory, a local community radio station & radio museum located within the grounds in a charming old building. There is a monkey enclosure, children’s play-ground, toilets and beautiful lawns with seating and the very grand Albert Hall. City Park also houses the Design Centre showcasing local craft, furniture and design pieces which can be purchased. In summer there are weekend concerts in the park & in February there is a 3 day Festivale of food & wine in City Park, attracting thousands of visitors. Further down the street from City Park & across the river is the QVMAG Museum & UTAS’s Academy Gallery. (1.2km from the apartment). Continue on you will find the Aurora Stadium where events and AFL matches are played, situated at Invermay and is an easy 1.6km from the apartment.

Leaving the apartment and turning left Brisbane Street you are now in the CBD. On the first corner (opposite the Design Centre) is the Royal Oak Hotel, restaurants & a cider house all within an easy stroll, with the Princess Theatre & Earl St Theatre in amongst it all. Further down Brisbane St you reach George St which has numerous cafes and restaurants (including Pierres), the famous heritage listed Umbrella Shop and Launceston’s foremost contemporary art gallery, Gallery Pejean. Continue walking west & you will find Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery (QVMAG) & then onto the waterside area of Seaport where there is a choice of numerous dining experiences & where river cruises can be accessed. Seaport is a 1.5km walk from the apartment.

There is a park at the top of our hill and to the right and most evenings there is a trio of food vans that serve their products to the people that like to gather beneath the beautiful trees in the park. Some evenings there is also live music in the park.

The Aquatic Centre is across the road from Maggie’s on York, the main entrance is on High Street. It is has an 8 lane indoor Competition Pool, outdoor lap pool, health club, spa, interactive water play features & a café.

Other attractions include the impressive Cataract Gorge, Princess Park, Harvest Farmer’s Market (Saturdays 9-12), the famous James Boag Brewery and, if you are a wine lover, Launceston’s Tamar Valley, home to one of Australia’s major cool-climate wine growing regions. The apartment is close to supermarkets & the hospital. The Silverdome velodrome where exhibitions, Targa and international singers is also 11 minutes away by car.

Launceston Airport is 14.8 km & 15mins away. Launceston Airport Shuttle Service bus is available for pickup from airport & apartment (arranged with service provider) airport shuttle cost – adult $15. Taxi to/from airport approx. $35 – $38.

Redline is a Tasmanian coach service for major regions and timetable would be available by ringing or going to their website.

Getting Around
There is no need for a car to explore Launceston. Take a local river cruise up the Tamar, or winery tour or hire a car and design your own touring routes. You can spend days exploring historic towns, vineyards, mountain ranges, galleries, artisan producers, crafts people, artists, cheese makers, markets and some of Tassie’s best short walks.

Make Maggie’s on York your base for a weekend, several days or weeks of enjoying the sights & tastes of Launceston or while touring Northern Tasmania. You will be overwhelmed by the scenery, the locals, the food and wines, the arts culture, something different and surprising around every corner.
